You might remember that last year our school gardening club was included as part of the Tesco Stronger Starts token scheme in stores around Burnage and Levenshulme. Thanks to your brilliant efforts, and to the lovely anonymous customer who picked out the golden token from the bag and chose our project to receive their special Golden Grant, we received £5000! The money had to spent on improving the outdoor areas of the school, so we worked hard to come with way of spending it that would benefit as many pupils as possible. Here what we’ve done:
Naturalising the EYFS outdoor areas
We have purchased this lovely personalised planter tub to enable outdoor growing in the Reception playground. We have also also installing a large wood-chip area surrounded by big tubs and pots containing a range of leafy green plants. This has greatly improved the Reception playground area and is providing lots of opportunities for imaginative play. The children love creating Jurassic habitats for the dinosaurs in the leaves of the Fatsia Japonica plants! Many thank to Ms Mrozek for all her fantastic work sourcing the materials and installing these wonderful additions to the school.
Mud Kitchens
We have bought some highly durable new mud kitchens for the area of woodland opposite the Early Years playgrounds. Huge thanks to the six families who turned out in the pouring rain to set them up!
Greenhouse
We have bought a new greenhouse for children to use during in-school and after school gardening club time.
Other ways we’re spending the money
We have bought two composting tumblers to compost the children’s left-over fruit waste in the playground with the Tesco money.
We are making a sensory garden in the outside area used by SEN pupils.
We have held back enough of the grant money to ensure the continued running of the school’s gardening club for the next five years (this is currently held on a Thursday after school).
